Is Your Ford’s A/C Ready for Summer? What Every SoCal Driver Should Check Before the Heat Peaks

In Los Angeles, a working air conditioner isn’t a comfort feature, it’s a necessity. When the San Fernando Valley is running 100°F on a Tuesday afternoon and you’re sitting in traffic on the 405, your A/C is doing the most important job in the car. The problem is that most drivers don’t think about their climate system until it’s already failing. By then, you’re scheduling an emergency appointment in the middle of the busiest service season of the year.

A few checks now – before the heat peaks can save you from that situation entirely. Here’s what to look for and when to bring it in.

Signs Your Ford’s A/C System Needs Attention

Weak or warm airflow: If the air coming out of your vents isn’t as cold as it used to be, or the system takes a long time to cool down the cabin, low refrigerant is the most common culprit. Refrigerant levels drop gradually over time through micro-leaks in the system, and a recharge combined with a leak check is a straightforward fix.

Unusual smells: A musty or mildew smell when you turn on the A/C usually indicates mold or bacteria buildup on the evaporator core. A cabin air filter replacement and evaporator cleaning typically resolves this. A sweet smell can indicate a refrigerant leak, which needs prompt attention.

Strange noises when the A/C engages: Rattling, clicking, or a grinding sound when the compressor kicks on can indicate a worn compressor clutch or debris in the system. This is worth diagnosing before the compressor fails completely – compressor replacements are significantly more expensive than a clutch repair.

A/C cycling on and off rapidly: Short-cycling usually points to refrigerant pressure issues or a failing pressure switch. It puts extra stress on the compressor and should be diagnosed before it causes further damage.

Water inside the cabin: If you’re finding moisture on the passenger-side floor after running the A/C, your condensate drain line is likely clogged. This is a minor fix but ignoring it can lead to mold growth and water damage to carpet and electronics.

What a Summer A/C Service at Galpin Covers

Our heating and cooling service inspection includes a pressure test of the refrigerant circuit, a check of the compressor, condenser, evaporator, and expansion valve, a cabin air filter inspection and replacement if needed, a check of the blower motor and duct system, and a temperature output test to verify the system is cooling to spec. If refrigerant is low, we’ll check for leaks before simply recharging, so you’re not back in a few months with the same problem.

Other Summer Service Items Worth Pairing

Since you’re already in for service, June is a smart time to handle a few other heat-related maintenance items:

Engine cooling system – coolant condition and concentration should be checked annually. SoCal summer heat taxes the cooling system harder than most climates.
Battery health – heat is a battery’s worst enemy, and batteries that are marginal in spring often fail completely in August. A quick load test takes minutes.
Belts and hoses – rubber components degrade faster in extreme heat. Cracking or soft spots on coolant hoses are worth catching before they become a roadside problem.
Tire pressure – tire pressure increases as temperatures rise. Overinflated tires in summer heat reduce grip and increase wear at the center of the tread.
